Carbohydrates: Are a major source of energy. There are two types- simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. Some sources of carbohydrates include, dry beans, peas, starchy vegetables, rice, grits, pasta, oatmeal, cornmeal, breads, and cereals.
Proteins: Are nutrients found in every cell in the body. Made up of amino acids building blocks for cells. The major functions of protein is growth and to fight off disease. There are two types known as incomplete and complete proteins. Sources of protein include meat, poultry, fish eggs, dairy products, dry beans, dry peas, grains, and nuts.
Minerals: Are inorganic elements needed for building tissue and regulating body functions. Major functions of minerals include, they are an essential part of bones, teeth, and red blood cells, and they help with the proper functioning of muscles, nerves, and blood clotting. The twelve main minerals are calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, sodium, copper, iodine, sulfur, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and zinc. |
